Seven letters to seven churches.  Without too much exception, the early church had many problems.  These letters were written only some 60 years into the history of the church.  The church had gotten pretty out of whack in a very short period of time.  When determining church doctrine, we need to be careful not to look to the "early church fathers", and look only to the New Testament in general, and the Gospels and Acts in particular.
