The primary purpose, the theological purpose, of this Epistle is to reveal Christ's love for us in what He did in pleading our case before God.  This short letter of Paul's to Philemon is one of the finest examples of the substitution that Jesus is for us.  Paul's Epistle to Philemon is also a study in relationships.  This is the practical purpose, the application of the Epistle.
