In a real way, this chapter is a direct attack against Jesus' authority as the Coming King and The Messiah, just as He claimed to be back in Chapter 19, as we saw last week.  The Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Scribes were not engaging in a verbal dialogue to discern the truth, they were engaged in verbal warfare in a kind of public relations game to discredit Jesus with the people, and to eventually kill Him.
