John the Baptist was like a tiller of the ground, preparing the people for the coming of the Messiah.  He laid words of repentance on the people of Israel just like you'd put compost on the garden soil.  He was telling them that the soil of their hearts was too hard to receive the seed, and it needed to be broken up and made usable.  He rubbed people the wrong way, but did the job of getting them ready for Jesus.
