We come now to one of the most important chapters in the Gospel of Mark.  Actually, whatever chapter or section we are studying at any given time is, at that moment, the most important.  But, this chapter is very important.  There are more miracles recorded in the Gospel of Mark than in any of the other Gospels.  And, in this chapter, Mark tells us of three of them.

Tonight we are finishing the fourth division, or book in the Book of Psalms...the Numbers section - with chapters 101 through 106.  Psalm 101 begins a grouping of Psalms that sing praise to the King.  As we have seen, the Book of Psalms is the hymnbook of Israel, and the subject of these six Psalms, as well as many of the others, is Jesus Christ.

Many people have bullet-proof armor around their hearts, so that God's truth simply bounces off.  This morning we'll learn about how to have a soft heart and fertile soil to grow God's truth.  In this chapter, we will see several parables, and then the miracle of calming the storm.

Tonight we begin the fourth section, or division, of the Book of Psalms....the Numbers section...Chapters 90 through 106...which records the wanderings and the unrest of the people.  We will be looking at Psalms 90 through 100 tonight, and we'll finish this section next week.  This section begins with a prayer of Moses.  It is the only Psalm of Moses in the Book.

Tonight we are finishing the third division, the Leviticus Section, of the Book of Psalms with our study of chapters 81 through 89.  Like so many of the Psalms, this one is linked to the previous one.  It is like a continuous story.  In Psalm 80 we say a prayer.  But, it wasn't a prayer for the church, it was a prayer for the  nation of Israel in the time of Jacob's Trouble...the End of the Age....the 70th Week of Daniel.

The news spread quickly that a miracle-working Teacher had arrived in Capernaum, and wherever Jesus went, great crowds gathered to see Him.  They wanted to see Him heal the sick and lame, they wanted to see Him cast out demons.  But they didn't come to hear the Gospel.

Tonight we are beginning the third division of the Book of Psalms - The Leviticus section.  In the Book of Leviticus, the sanctuary is prominent.  We will also see the prominence of the sanctuary in this section of the Psalms.  In addition to the emphasis on the sanctuary, the Book of Leviticus focuses on two things:  1) That God is holy, and 2) That without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins.

The Gospel of Mark is, chronologically, the first Gospel that was written.  It was also one of the first books of the New Testament.  It was probably written in 63 A.D., or maybe in early 64 A. D.  The Gospel of Mark is actually Peter's Gospel, written by Mark.   It was written from Rome, at a time when severe persectuions were breaking out in Rome, and may eye-witnesses to Jesus were being executed.  So, writing down what Jesus said and did became very important.

We are now completing the second "section" of the Book of Psalms as we review chapters 69 through 72 this evening.  As we have seen before, Psalms is divided into five distinct sections, corresponding with the five Books of Moses.  This second section, the Exodus section, ends with chapter 72.

We enter a new section of the Psalms  -  chapters 61 through 68  -  where we see the cry and the confidence of the godly.  As we see and hear the pleadings of the godly in these eight Psalms, we will find how rooted and steadfast the Psalmist's confidence is in the Lord.  We will also see a picture of Jesus Christ in these Psalms, and find help for ourselves in certain situations.  As with most, if not all, of the Psalms, there is a historical setting, a future prophetical setting for Israel, and a message for us, the church.

Peter, in the last chapter of his last Epistle, describes the nature of the heresies which will take place in the last days.  He tells us that the Lord is patient, but His patience is wearing thin.  A thousand years with the Lord are but as a day, but He will come and judge the world as He has promised, and the heavens and the earth will be burned up.

These next five Psalms, 56 through 60, are known as 'Michtam' Psalms.  The word 'Michtam' means 'engraven or permanent'.  These Psalms are substantial, enduring or fixed.  All of these Psalms have a prophetic undertone.  Between the historical experiences of David, and the prophetic tone for Israel in the future, there is a message for us, the church, today.

False doctrines had already begun to make inroads into the Christian church as Peter was writing this Epistle.  Both Second Peter and the Book of Jude deal with false teachers.  Paul also addressed false teachers in First Corinthians Chapters 6 & 7.

Psalm 52 begins a series of four Psalms tht give us a prophetic picture of the coming Antichrist.  These four Psalms, 52 through 55, are teaching (maschil) Psalms.  In these Psalms, God gives us spiritual truths about the future.  In these Psalms, we get accurate instructions relative to the "Man of Sin" who is coming, I believe, very soon.

We now come to the Second Epistle of Peter.  First Peter dealt with problems from outside the church.  Now he deals with the problems that will come from inside the church.  Peter writes to warn believers about the false teachers who are teaching a damaging false doctrine.  He begins by urging them to keep a close watch on thier personal lives.

Psalm 49 is a Psalm that contrasts the ways of God in His dealing with the wicked and with the righteous.  Psalm 49 is about the end of those who boast in their riches - not simply the emptiness of the riches themselves, but the end of those who boast in them.

This Chapter is for Peter's time, but it also fits our time as well.  Peter covers the queston "How does the believer live in a hostile, pagan world?"  Peter also highlights some prophetic aspect of the "days of Noah".

Most of the Psalms are unfamiliar, but they consist of one of the richest portions of God's Word.  If we give the emphasis to the Psalms that we should, we would have a different perspective on the entire Word of God, and also on God's purposes in relation to the nation of Israel.

These three familiar Psalms are beloved Psalms and present Jesus Christ as the Shepherd - each one emphasizing a different aspect of His Person and His work.  Christ died for us (past); Christ lives for us (present); and Christ will come for us (future).
